Exploración de carreras para nuestros niños 

Durante la vida, los niños aspiran a ser muchas cosas diferentes cuando crezcan. Un niño puede querer ser trabajador sanitario y conductor del camión de reciclaje. Otros sueñan con ser bomberos, policías o maestros. Desde una edad temprana, podemos animar a nuestros niños a aprender más sobre distintos tipos de carreras y trabajos haciendo lo siguiente:

  • Llevando a nuestros niños a nuestros trabajos después de la escuela, en la tarde o los fines de semana.
  • Animando a nuestros niños a ayudarnos con varios aspectos de nuestros trabajos (por ejemplo: diferentes tareas para los maestros, organizar la basura y el reciclaje para la recolección de basura y centros de reciclaje, y realizar revisiones de seguridad contra incendios en el hogar).
  • Ayudando a nuestros niños a aprender a explorar carreras específicas a través de investigaciones, participando en cursos tempranos de colegios universitarios y participando en experiencias laborales relevantes.

What EJ Has Learned From His First Year of College!

When EJ was in high school, I pushed him to pass his AP classes so he could receive credit for his lower division college courses while in high school.   By the end of his first year in college, he had just two of these courses left to complete. Typically, the advanced math and science classes are defined by the students as “weeder courses” because these courses weed out the students who question the incredible success that they achieved in high school and drop or change their college goals. The realization that a student’s hard work and success in high school can become challenging at an outstanding college is humbling.

Helping High School Students Prepare for Their Futures!

Yesterday, I met with our high school leadership team. We were discussing how to help our students prepare for a future career or goal. One colleague stated that we should teach our students autonomy. Another argued that we need to put family values first and help students grow with this focus. A third leader suggested that we needed to identify how those values might challenge a student’s future career and college success. How Parents Can Support Their Children’s School Successes

Providing students and staff with challenging opportunities can bolster their confidence. This can improve their desire to excel when they experience success.

Writing a Novel

Our middle school’s teachers have dedicated themselves to promoting literacy in all subject areas this year because many of our students are not reading and writing at grade level. Our 7th grade teachers decided to have their students participate in the NaNoWriMo National Novel Writing Month last November.

Each 7th grade student wrote an 8,000-word novel about a personal experience, hope, or dream by completing the following steps:

  1. Research a topic.
  2. Outline the novel’s fictional or non-fictional contents.
  3. Write the novel in 30 days.
  4. Peer review and self-edit through feedback.
  5. Use the Hemingway software application for writing feedback.
  6. Professionally assemble the novel.
  7. Learn how to sell a self-published book at a local book fair.

Many students were surprised that they could complete the assignment. They also began pursuing more writing challenges that allowed them to be creative. [Read more…]

Wow! My College Son Grew Up!

It has been several months since my son left home and went off to college. It is only winter break! But, to me, my son now looks like a man or a grown-up college guy.

A Campus Visit

When visiting EJ at school we were without a car. We used public transportation to tour San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area.  San Francisco has become his city and my son now acts as my tour guide when showing me around. [Read more…]
